About five of them did the same thing to me until one of the commanders who knew my father came and stopped them, but also took me to his house to make me his wife. I just accepted him because of fear and didn't want to say no because he might do the same thing to me too. This story shows how vulnerable girls are in armed conflict. Actually, they can be affected by war in five different ways. Firstly, they are often direct victims of violence -- killed, maimed or sexually violated as war crimes are committed against them. Secondly, they can be recruited and used as combatants for fighting in the battlefield.

Yvonne Park Hsu. During World War II, Japan forced , to , women from all over Asia into prostitution to satisfy the sexual cravings of Japanese soldiers. These women thus forced into prostitution were euphemistically called "comfort women". In December , three former Korean comfort women filed suit in the Tokyo District Court, seeking damages for their sufferings. From both legal and moral perspectives, Japan needs to make reparations for violations of these women's fundamental human rights. By meeting the obligations arising from its past abuses of human rights, Japan will take a significant step toward preventing its militant past from re-occurring, fostering protection of human rights in the future and building trust among its neighboring countries.

Comfort women were mainly women and girls forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army in occupied countries and territories before and during World War II , and the earlier program of voluntary prostitution. Estimates vary as to how many women were involved, with numbers ranging from as low as 20, by Japanese historian Ikuhiko Hata [6] to as high as , to , by Chinese scholar Hua-Lun Huang [7] ; the exact numbers are still being researched and debated. Originally, the brothels were established to provide soldiers with voluntary prostitutes in order to reduce the incidence of wartime rape , a cause of rising anti-Japanese sentiment across occupied territories.
